Keep Your Pools Pest Free

Summer memories are made poolside.  Spending time with family, friends, and neighbors in your backyard oasis can be the highlight of any summer season.  Unfortunately, as much as you enjoy your pool, pests and rodents may find the same summer reprieve in its cool, refreshing waters as you do.   However, following these few poolside tips, you can keep pests away and enjoy the summer poolside.

Remove Potential Pest Habitats

Detract pests from your pools, it is important that you remove any plants, or other features, that could be a habitat for an unwanted pest or rodent.  For example, mosquitoes and other insects are attracted to standing water, so features such as birdbaths should be removed. Bamboo and fruit trees attract rats and other rodents.  Keep them planted far enough away from your pool to keep rodents at bay.

Install Traps

If you find that pests and rodents have become a major problem around your pool, it is a good idea to work with a pest management or pest control company to install traps around your pool. Simple installation of specialized insect traps will keep flies and mosquitoes at bay.  Rodent traps can be effective, especially when they are placed near appealing food sources. A pest management and control company will be your best tool in designing and creating the perfect trap system to eliminate your problems.

Create A Barrier Around Your Pool

One of the most effective methods of keeping rodents and larger pests out of your pool is to use a barrier.  A pool safety fence will keep rodents out by physically preventing them from entering the pool. Other materials, such as saline solution (i.e. water and salt), will deter pests without blocking access to your pool.  Another spray that experts recommend is a mixture of Cayenne pepper and water or a mix of onion and jalapeno pepper. Again, like the saline solution, spray liberally around your pool.

Install an Automatic Sprinkler System

Another way you can keep animals away from your pool is to install an automatic sprinkler system.  Even if you do not have grass in the immediate area around your pool, the unexpected spray of water can be enough to scare away animals and rodents.  High-tech sprinklers also known as scarecrow sprinklers that have an infrared beam that detects the movement of animals can also be great deterrent. When a creature is recognized, it sends out a stream of water to scare it off.  This natural deterrent will keep pests out of your pool area.
