A Jerusalem cricket is related to grasshoppers – but look and act quite differently. They are also known as potato bugs but do not feed off the root. They are common in Mexico and throughout the Western United States. They have a unique head shape – some refer to it as ‘almost human,’ which makes it stand out when people see one for the first time.

These crickets tend to live underground and feed off of roots, tubers, and other small insects. They have a very unpleasant smell that is noticeable to the human nose. They scare away predators by producing an aggressive hissing sound made by rubbing their hind legs against their abdomen.

Are Jerusalem Crickets Dangerous?

Jerusalem crickets are not seen as a pest control problem for several reasons. First, they feed off smaller insects, which helps manage pest problems. They also tend to stay hidden – so, they do not bother humans. However, if provoked, a Jerusalem cricket will bite. They have incredibly strong jaws which allow them to bite hard. Luckily, they are non-venomous and non-stingy, although it can be quite painful. In the rare case of a bite, wash the area with soap and water and apply an antibacterial cream or gel. If you experience mild flu-like symptoms or have sores on your skin, reach out to your medical provider.
