Spiders Can Mean Problems in the Fall for Homeowners

Spiders during the Fall - Pest Control

As colder weather falls upon us, it seems as if spiders are invading our homes.  However, experts remind us that they have probably been around all along. In general, these eight-legged creatures are just coming out of places where they have been hiding and unnoticed during the hot summer months.  Keep reading to learn why arachnids are more noticeable in the fall and what you can do to keep them out of your home.

Spiders Are Bigger in the Fall

One reason that these pests are more noticeable in the fall is that spiders tend to be larger in the fall.  Spiders that were babies in the spring and early summer have had months to grow into larger, more robust pests.  Those larger, more mature specimens are also out and about in the fall because it is mating season. Spiders that have been hidden are out looking for a mate.  Once they mate, chances are good they will go back into hiding. However, in the fall, you can expect to see larger spiders looking to mate.

We Notice Drifting Gossamer

Fall is also the time of year where we see drifting gossamer.  Drifting gossamer is produced by dispersing baby spiders. Known as ‘ballooning,’ babies will climb on to high points on fences, plants or trees and produce silk threads that act like sails and get carried off by the wind.  Babies are able to travel very long distances on their drifting gossamers and help to spread spider populations

Tips to Reduce Spiders In Your Home

pest proofing your home

If you are seeing more spiders in the fall season, the first step you can take is to remove any webs as they appear in your doorways and ceiling areas.  This discourages them from hanging out in your common areas. This will also encourage arachnids to go back into hiding where they came from.  Any pests you do see can be swatted, replaced outdoors, or vacuumed up.

You also want to take the time to seal up any door frames, window frames, or small cracks and crevices that invite spiders inside.  Essential oils can also be used to repel spiders. Some of the most effective oils include peppermint, spearmint, orange, lemon, and lime.
